Jakarta – Story telling can be useful in all fields. Various research story telling is applied in corporate relations, organizational learning, organizational culture, and even as a creative counseling media for children. This then makes storytelling very important and powerful.
In his video on the LSPR Jakarta Youtube channel, Mr. Rudi Iskandar, Head of the Postgraduate Program Thesis Department and Director of Research and Community Services, stated that story telling does not only generate positive effects like those used in post-conflict Maluku. Story telling even plays a role in the emergence of conflict and causes social divisions. For example, in Indonesia, there are many narratives that actually create a gap between the conflicting groups.
Mr. Rudi Iskandar said that storytelling was also widely used in the field of education when teaching religious values. Elementary school teachers use story telling as a delivery medium. This is similar to the holy books which mostly convey the contents by retelling the things that happened in the past then take a moral story as an example to instill religious values in the story.
Story telling becomes an important factor in change, because of its ability to hinder or facilitate change. Therefore, story telling must be used to promote positive changes that must be made especially to achieve constructive goals in creating tolerance and inclusivity.
“Stories, Storytelling and Storykeeping become very strategic when we want to make efforts to build towards democracy, strengthen the values of the younger generation and build inclusiveness and tolerance.”, said Mr. Rudi Iskandar.
