Jakarta – On Monday the 16th of August, as part of LSPR’s UPSCALE Workshop, an in-depth seminar was held in order to educate scholars and lecturers on the significant ability simply designed graphics have on increasing the effectiveness of social media campaigns and video creation. Moderated by Mr Edang Purnomo (Social Media Manager, Communication & Reputation Dept at LSPR) and Mr Aditya Nugroho Pratomo (Lecturer for Commercial Publishing, Photography Communications and Typography at LSPR) as the sessions main speaker.
“Design is not art” Mr Aditya stated as he began his presentation, “It is in fact, the process of envisioning & creating solutions for people, objects and abstract systems to address a need or a problem” Clearing up the common misconception and affirming the fact that graphic design is not about expression-like art is but in fact it is about creating resolutions. He then proceeded to explain the different stages one must go through when designing and they are broken up into 4 points. First of those points being Discovery: gathering data and becoming familiar with the situation through analysis and via identifying the target audience, asking questions, researching, etc. Following that, is planning: identifying key needs, establishing goals and objectives, developing a strategy and plan to address this issue.
Mr Aditya also stressed the importance of knowing your target audience, “Match media with your target audience” he articulated, “it is relevant as it will help you establish which media to use”. Leading us to the next point, the creative stage: exploring conceptual options and potential design directions into a clear view. Final stage includes application, applying your creative direction and finding the best tools to implement your vision.
A large portion of the workshop focused on each participant trying to create their own form of graphic design on the application Canva. Whether that may be in the form of a presentation, instagram story, poster, etc, under the topic of fighting the pandemic via vaccinations. The participants were fortunately guided by Mr Aditya and Mr Edang as they were providing demonstrations and advice throughout, answering multiple questions several participants had. Some of their crucial advice included: accentuating the importance of colour, hierarchy and aligning your design with the key message you wish to deliver.
On the whole, this segment of LSPR’s UPSCALE Workshop was very informative as it managed to advise participants on how to better develop their graphic design skill and apply it to future work in class when teaching, specifically focusing on working with the application, Canva.
