Communication education through performing arts is a form of final semester exam for students from the PAC concentration, and first-year students in the Introduction to PAC. At this stage, the creativity of first year students is honed to look stunning on stage, and master the preparation behind the scenes. These skills include directing roles, arranging lighting, sound, costumes, make-up, and selling show tickets. However, there are some interesting differences in this year’s event, because it is intended as a virtual show, students are also trained to be able to understand how to take pictures with professional cameras and beautify the results through editing. The determination of story themes and genres carried by each class has a variety, some of which use modern and traditional stories.
Since the beginning, this event has always attracted the attention of the audience, both internal and external to LSPR. Although this year’s event was held virtually, it did not reduce the enthusiasm of the audience to witness the work of LSPR students. In 2008 LSPR’s 4th Theater Festival, broke the record for the Longest Theater Production and received an award from the Indonesian Record Museum (MURI). “The purpose of this course is for students to gain experience in work, experience in creating work concepts, experience with aesthetics and experience to feel the function of art education for life and to work in teams,” explained the Dean of the Faculty of Communication, Mikhael Yulius Cobis. He explained that through theatrical production, students not only learn to appear confidently in front of the public, but also gain experience in dealing with many characters and roles that reflect or will be applied in real life. “Because actually everyone is an actor in the drama of their own lives. To be a successful life actor, one must have communication skills, so that they can convey messages in the form of words or gestures,” said Mikhael.
Dr. Sri Ulya Suskarwati as Head of Undergraduate Program in Communication, stated that one of the characteristics of the LSPR Institute curriculum is conveying communication messages through art performances. Achievements in learning in this area are through various academic activities with a Student Centered Learning, which focuses on lecturers in encouraging students to understand science at the level of knowledge, skills, and attitudes. “Through the Project Based Learning, students are involved in designing and implementing the theories and concepts that have been learned in class. The Theater Festival is one of the projects as a result of the work and creativity of students that we should appreciate. This activity is their effort to package communication through performing activities with a touch of art in conveying messages to their target audience,” he said.
Dr. Yessy Gusman, a senior artist who is also one of the lecturers at LSPR said “The LSPR Theater Festival which is held every year is a wonderful means for our students to learn how to communicate their thoughts and feelings through working together as a team in conveying a message through a media. artworks. Not only that, one of the Batch 25 students who is a contestant for Indonesian Idol 2021, Karen said, “In this Theater Festival activity, what I feel is definitely challenging because I have never acted while singing and dancing at the same time. However, singing, acting is my passion and I love dancing as well , so it’s not a burden at all. It’s also nice to get input from Lecturers or Lecturer Assistants, because I can improve. It’s exhausting but fun! I’m really grateful to have the opportunity to become the main cast. In the series of The 27thLSPR Theater Festival , I gained new experiences, knowledge, developed talents, and of course I can be more confident.” he said.
