On Friday, 18 March 2016, LSPR Research Center held a discussion about social media, titled Between Freedom of Speech and Hate Speech. The discussion was held with Mr. Kamsul Hasan, the head of Commission Competence of Central Indonesian Journalist Association (Komisi Kompetensi PWI Pusat).

Social media in this era now is filled with many opinion, it has blurred the lines between hate speech and freedom of speech. Social media as a medium and individuals as a part of society, surely must follow and understand the existing ethical codes and law. Mr Kamsul explained how the legal grounds of freedom of speech are on article 28 of the second amandement. Until finally in 2015, Kapolri released a circular letter regarding the result of hate speech, the types and the kind of action the law will impose to those who do it.

From those legal grounds, Mr Kamsul continued with what we can learn from the existing cases such as Obor Rakyat. As communication students and the future of this nation, it’s important that we are careful and aware when posting on social media.
