With the improvement of technology, the transfer rate of information in the digital world has reached its biggest numbers since the first development of the internet. More transfer rate, means more information are being sent in every second. This development has benefited the society in the most unimaginable way that has been never thought of before. But, it also has its downside. With that much information are being relayed in a very short amount of time, nobody can make sure that each and every piece of information are credible, and not all of them are true. This leads false information being consumed by the society and the masses, resulting in baseless rumors, fake news, and hoaxes.
In battling this situation, the U.S Embassy in Indonesia has cooperated with London School of Public Relations, to hold a seminar for the Mass Communication major students enrolled in LSPR. The seminar was held at Prof. Dr. Djajusman Auditorium and Performance Hall, 3rd of May 2017. Prof. Steven Reiner from Stony Brook University School of Journalism shared to the student ways to filter the hoax and fake news at the same time. Prof. Steven Reiner explains political partisans, propagandists, and digital entrepreneurs are the reason why fake news exists. He also explained fake news come in another name of an old fashion propaganda, and has a big impact on everywhere regardless of what it is. He then added, if the fake news were to left unchecked, the democracy and the quality of the public will deteriorate.
Prof. Steven Reiner introduces IMVAIN, a five stages method useful as a foolproof to detect fake news. The method consists of “Independent sources are better than self-interested sources”, “Multiple sources are better than single sources”, “sources who Verify with evidence are better than sources who assert”, Authoritative/Informed sources are better than uninformed sources”, and “Named sources are better than unnamed sources”. Prof. Steven Reiner believes IMVAIN is capable of helping us to figure out the true nature of the news, and whether it is real or not. (Tarrasch/Mega).
