The ASEAN Autism Network (AAN) was formally inaugurated during the Autism Workshop organized by the Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability APCD in cooperation with JICA in Bangkok on 13-15 December 2010. This unique gathering brought together 27 representatives from 9 countries, including Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. Each participant had an autistic person in their family. A core concept of the workshop was ‘Family Comes First’.
In 2020, through the assistance of the London School Centre for Autism Awareness (LSCAA) and APCD, the ASEAN Secretariat formally accepted the AAN as an accredited ASEAN civil society partner organization. After the ASEAN accreditation, a new AAN Secretariat office was moved from the APCD Bangkok headquarters to the LSCAA Building, LSPR Campus, Jakarta, Indonesia.
Dear APRN Friends,
On our second day for the Global Alliance Education & Training Month, we will have Mrs. Erlinda Koe as the Chair Emerita Autism Society Philippines, on her session she will be presenting about “Empowering Families With Autism” as April is also known as the month for Autism, therefore we want to spread and empower the awareness of families with autism. You can access the full video through this link: https://youtu.be/icb9pfd2ipY or visit our Youtube Channel at ASEAN PR Network.
Happy ASEAN Day! It has been a wonderful 54-year journey filled with hopes, achievements, and dreams for a stronger ASEAN Community. Together we can prosper and united we can achieve more for the greater good of ASEAN people.
Vision
-
Family support groups to collaborate, cooperate, coordinate, and unite in developing a holistic autism curriculum that would be local, affordable and accessible. Strategies and intervention programmes would be non-discriminatory in support of families, including those economically challenged. More importantly, the extended family structure on which the ASEAN community is based would remain the basis of any developmental programme and strategy.
-
Autism advocacy in ASEAN. It would work at the national and sub-regional levels to promote the rights of Autistic Persons. Self-advocates could be supported to form their own groups at the community level.
-
Discussion of autism-related issues to promote information sharing and facilitate common approaches.
Mission
To support, assist, facilitate and enhance autism-related family support groups in collaboration with other stakeholders in the ASEAN region and globally.
