Jakarta – LSPR International Relations and Partnerships Office held their 6th Webinar Series with International University Partners with De Montfort University on 14 May 2020. The 6th webinar featured Dr. Ben Harbisher, Senior Lecturer and Prof. Stuart Price Professor of Media & Political Discourse at De Montfort University, Leicester who shared their expertise on “Contingency Planning & Branding the Pandemic Resilience, Risk & Public Communication Surveillance & Propaganda” and “Dual Purpose of Emergency Planning”. The session was moderated by Mr. Rudi Sukandar, Director of LSPR Center for Research, Publication, and Community Service at LSPR Communication & Business Institute. The LSPR Webinar Series with International University Partners aims to provide a range of high quality topics from experienced communication professionals during the COVID-19 Pandemic which allows for international learning during the “Stay at Home” period.
The webinar began with an introduction from Dr. Ben Harbisher who discussed the implementation of marketing strategies and techniques to encourage compliance to pandemic safety measures. He also included how social media has played a big role in maintaining control during the COVID-19 pandemic. He discussed further about the types of messages used by the government such as, Stay at Home, Protect the NHS, Save Lives. He continued by sharing some popular advertising campaigns implemented by the government and how they were successful or not and why. To conclude is highlighted some key features that we could see in the future once the pandemic is under control.
The webinar continued with a presentation from Professor Stuart Price who discussed the framing process of the pandemic through state emergency planning and how the media frame their messages. He then continued to discuss how the use of certain words brings strong emphasis on messages aimed towards the public. The session then elaborated on social political effects and gaining social control.
The session came to an end by sharing the impact of message framing and its dual purpose. After the presentation, participants were offered the chance to ask questions relevant to the topic discussed. A total of 97 participants joined the webinar.
