Jakarta – May 4, 2021, Lecturers of the LSPR Communication and Business Institute were invited by the Pancasila Ideology Development Agency (BPIP) to become resource person in a seminar with the theme “The Role of Media and the Young Generation in the Actualization of Pancasila Values”, at the Bandung Social Welfare Polytechnic. online and offline attended by 700 participants. In the seminar, Dr. Rino F. Boer said that proxy warfare was carried out by exploiting the potential for conflict to create state instability. He explained that there are many forms of proxy war that have occurred in Indonesia, including riots due to the ignition of horizontal conflicts in the regions, planting seeds of radicalism and anti-Pancasila ideology, and spreading fake news (hoaxes) in cyberspace to distort information.
“The use of media nowadays has completely changed from being a source of news and information to being a source of confirmation of belief and justification”, he said. According to him, not only that, but the impact of proxy warfare also greatly affects the vulnerability of exposure to radicalism and acts of terrorism, especially for the younger generation. He even explained that based on data from the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) in 2020, there is 85 percent of millennials are potentially exposed to radicalism. “Should this be allowed? Of course not, this is our common duty to overcome it,” he emphasized. He encouraged the role of the State, media and students in contextualization and actualization to use media facilities based on Pancasila values. “The Indonesian nation is competing against time. with the threat of disintegration that is increasingly real. So students are agents of change and the media are the gateways of change, both approaches are very important “, he concluded.
On the same occasion, Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Business LSPR Institute Yuliana Riana Prasetyawati, M.M stated that the number of social media users in Indonesia continues to increase. Until January 2021, YouTube social media users are in the top rank, namely 93.8 percent, followed by WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. She also explained that the average social media user is the younger generation, from 18 years to 32 years. She hopes that with the increasing number and complexity of digital media, she should be careful in using it. “Use digital media wisely. Think before sharing, avoid fake news, make it a personal branding and a smart digital creator,” she said closing the seminar presentation.
